My classroom management philosophy is based upon creating a safe learning environment that has clear expectations for students and is intentionally inviting. To develop such an environment, I will practice Love and Logic to develop better relationships with my students through empathy. Another key part of creating a safe learning environment is being organized and developing consistency for the students through daily procedures and routines. My three classroom rules: be here, be ready, and be good, will promote respect and responsibility in my classroom.
My Ideal Classroom Setup
Desks: I arranged the desks in groups of three because group work and collaboration is extremely important for learning.
Beanbag Chairs: I added the beanbag chairs for a quiet and cozy homework area. Since there are only two, there will be a system in place allowing each student the opportunity to use them. The file cabinet will act as a wall separating the quiet zone from the rest of the room.
Shelving: The shelves in the back of the room will contain homework baskets and slots for students to place their math assignments/notebooks so they are not left at home. The shelves on the right side of the room will contain math textbooks and other resources, such as math games and activities. The shelving in the top left corner of the classroom will hold all the supplies the students may need throughout the year.
Teacher’s desk: Having my desk in the back of the room makes it more approachable during worktime.
Cell phones: To address the issue of cell phones in the classroom, I will have a calculator holder hanging on the wall in the back of the room and each student will be assigned a certain pocket (the numbers on the pockets will correspond to their number in the class, which will be assigned alphabetically).
